Right now, the fighters in the bantamweight division are very serious about fighting for the top spot. Over the weekend at UFC San Antonio, Marlon Vera and Cory Sandhagen fought against each other to determine who is better. On May 6th, Aljamain Sterling and Henry Cejudo will go head-to-head in a UFC title fight where the winner will be crowned champion of this division.
After a couple of disappointments in 2021, Sandhagen won again by split decision against Vera. He started off really strong and confused Vera with lots of different moves and punches; he also integrated some sneaky wrestling skills better than before. Sean O’Malley (also known as “Sugar”) was watching from the sidelines, as he is the second-ranked fighter in his weight class. He was very impressed with how well Sandhagen did against someone who was the only one to ever beat him (agreeing 16 wins and 1 no contest).
O’Malley said on his TimboSugarShow podcast that Cory was better than the other guy. He compared it to basketball, saying that having a bigger cage is like playing a game with half court. A big cage is 40 percent bigger than a small one, this would have given an advantage to ‘Chito’ in a small cage.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with ‘Chito’, I think Cory is really good, and that style beat the other person. He isn’t very fast but he is really smart, really persistent and his overall performance was great. Cory stayed focused for 25 minutes and did what he had to do, which was more than I expected.
If he gets the chance, O’Malley will have to wrestle against either Sterling or Cejudo since one of them is likely to win. At the moment, O’Malley is watching them fight and thinking deeply about who his next opponent might be. He’s 28-years-old and they’re all in the same 135 pound weight class.
At UFC San Antonio, the opening two rounds of the main event were in Marlon Sandhagen’s favor – the judges all declared him as a winner. His striking technique was expected by O’Malley, but he didn’t anticipate Sandhagen taking advantage in wrestling.
I was really shocked by the lack of skills that “Chito” Vera had. He just stayed on his back, not using any of his abilities like Merab Dvalishvili does when he puts a lot of pressure on his opponents and makes it hard for them to get up. I don’t think this is a very good strategy because you can’t expect to win in three rounds if you’ve lost two.
“Every once in a while you’ll have to have a fight. You must come and show up on the night of the fight. That is really important.”
Dana White Supports Leon Edwards, Masvidal Jabs at Covington, and Shevchenko Calls out Referee Herzog at UFC 285 & 287
The UFC President Dana White recently spoke in support of Leon Edwards, saying that the match-up between Usman and Covington would have been on the list anyway. Meanwhile, Jorge Masvidal took a jab at Colby Covington, with Jon Anik threatening him by saying “Covington is only a champion of calling the cops”. Valentina Shevchenko suggested referee Jason Herzog might be responsible for Alexa Grasso’s loss at UFC 285. Lastly, Li Jingliang was unable to compete against Michael Chiesa due to an injury so he had to get scratched from UFC 287.
