Garry Tonon used his exceptional grappling skills to secure a victory at the ONE Championship cage on Friday.
Tonon, an experienced ADCC athlete, faced the unbeaten Shamil Gasanov in the last MMA clash of the evening at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium, Bangkok, Thailand. This co-main event of ONE Fight Night 12 saw Tonon pulling out all the stops to claim victory.
In the first round, Tonon initiated a guard pull, but his undefeated opponent, Gasanov, with a record of 13-0 and 11 finishes to his name, thwarted his attempt and started targeting Tonon with knee strikes. Despite the relentless assault, Tonon managed to dodge most of the strikes and then proceeded to gain control by taking Gasanov’s back on their feet. From then on, both fighters struggled to cause any substantial damage.
As the second round began, Tonon charged with three high kicks, all of which were successfully blocked by the Russian contender. In response, Gasanov took Tonon down but the tables turned as both fighters got back on their feet. Tonon then went on to attack Gasanov with a kneebar, eventually forcing the Russian to submit.
Tonon, with an 8-1 MMA record, stated in his post-match interview that Gasanov “hit me hard”, but he also sensed Gasanov’s knee “snap” during the submission, which forced him to submit. For his performance, Tonon was rewarded with an extra $50,000 and he expressed a desire for a shot at the title.
