Nate Diaz Teammate Fires Back at Boxer Esquiva Falcao’s Sparring Claims: “That Guy Got Destroyed”

The Diaz camp and boxer Esquiva Falcao might be on the verge of a heated confrontation.

Falcao, an undefeated professional boxer and Olympic silver medalist, recently gained attention for criticizing Nate Diaz’s boxing skills after a sparring session at a Los Angeles gym. In an Instagram video posted earlier this month, Falcao disparaged Diaz, labeling him as “bad,” “overweight,” and claiming the UFC veteran appeared depleted by the end of their spar. Falcao, who is scheduled to fight Vincenzo Gualtieri for the vacant IBF title on July 1, further alleged that a coach asked him to hold back during the session so Diaz could make it through 10 rounds.

Falcao’s comments quickly went viral, especially as Diaz is preparing for his professional boxing debut against Jake Paul on August 5. On The MMA Hour, Chris Avila, a longtime teammate of Diaz, vehemently refuted Falcao’s account.

“That guy got utterly destroyed,” Avila asserted on The MMA Hour. “Yeah, we just returned from LA where we visited a boxing gym. This guy is a silver medalist from Brazil, boasting a 30-0 record, and he’s about to fight for a world title next week. But boxers are like that, you know—they can be pretty ignorant. They tend to be passive, overly passive.

“So Nate sparred with him, endured 12 rounds. Man, he got beaten badly in every round. Afterward, he immediately goes to the coach, saying, ‘Oh, I’m cutting weight, that’s why I didn’t look great.’ And then, on his [Instagram] story, we had someone translate it from Portuguese—he was talking trash.”

But the feud didn’t end there.

According to Avila, Falcao returned to the gym the following day and pulled the same stunt on him—sparring with Avila and then talking trash afterward. However, due to the language barrier resulting from Falcao’s comments in Portuguese, no one from Team Diaz understood what had been said until after both sparring sessions had concluded.

“The next day, we went back, and the coach said, ‘Hey, he wants to spar with you,'” Avila recounted. “So I sparred with him, and once again, he lost every single round—and then he had the audacity to talk more trash in Portuguese. But we didn’t find out until after all the sparring was done.

“Anyway, regarding that guy, screw him too.”

At present, both Avila and Diaz are diligently preparing for their respective bouts on August 5, with Avila slated to face former UFC fighter Jeremy Stephens on the Paul vs. Diaz pay-per-view card.

Teammates Alan Sanchez, Jose Aguayo, and Luciano Ramos are also expected to compete on the same card. While Diaz may be considered a significant underdog against Paul, Avila hints that the Diaz Army might stun a few people with an extraordinary performance.

“He’s looking unstoppable, as always,” Avila commented on Diaz’s progress.

“He’s performing exceptionally well, looking razor-sharp. And to all the doubters out there, get ready for a surprise.”
