Michel Pereira is momentarily stepping away from the welterweight division.

MMA Hook has verified with well-informed sources that Pereira, who holds a record of 28 wins, 11 losses, and 2 no contests, will face Marc-Andre Barriault, with a record of 16 wins, 6 losses, and 1 no contest, in a middleweight showdown at UFC Vegas 81 on October 14. This information was initially brought to light by MMA journalist Laerte Viana.

Pereira is set to engage in his first fight above the 170-pound weight class since his openweight match against Dae Sung Kim in February 2019, prior to his signing with the UFC. This will also be his inaugural bout in the middleweight category within the organization.

The necessity for this change arose after Pereira failed to meet the weight requirements for his planned fight against Stephen Thompson, slated for UFC 291. Weighing in three pounds over the welterweight limit, Thompson and his team chose to turn down the match. Remarkably, this marked the second occasion Pereira had not made weight while with the UFC.

On the other hand, Canada’s Barriault is pursuing his third consecutive victory, and his fourth win in his last five outings, as he prepares to enter the ring at the UFC APEX in October. His current momentum is built on back-to-back triumphs over competitors Eryk Anders and Julian Marquez.

The report also acknowledges contributions from Mike Heck and Damon Martin.
