Once more, UFC star Conor McGregor is attracting attention for the wrong reasons, following allegations of sexual assault that emerged after he was spotted at an NBA Finals Miami Heat game.
As of now, no legal charges have been made against McGregor, and his legal representatives have vehemently refuted the accusations. They dismissed the accuser’s attorney’s request for a settlement in lieu of a lawsuit as a simple “shakedown.”
Despite not being officially charged with any crime, McGregor has found himself at the center of multiple sexual assault allegations in recent years. This prompts UFC veteran Matt Brown to question why the former champion keeps finding himself in precarious situations.
“The major issue is whether Conor is putting himself in situations where these kinds of allegations can arise?” Brown spoke about McGregor’s circumstances in the latest episode of The Fighter vs. The Writer podcast. “Not that I have the right to dictate anyone’s life choices, but if I were him, I would keep a low profile.”
“Whenever these accusations arise, it implies that, at the very least, there were people present who had the chance to make these allegations. He must have been communicating with or socializing with them in the same vicinity. That’s the bare minimum,” Brown explained.
“If he isn’t around these women, they can’t level these accusations. But if he’s in their proximity, especially while partying or behaving erratically, these allegations have the potential to surface,” Brown added.
While Brown cannot pass judgment on what happened in Miami, he is troubled by the recurrence of such allegations against McGregor.
McGregor has been arrested twice since 2018 and faced charges for assaulting a man at a Dublin bar. Charges were also filed against him in Rome after he allegedly attacked an Italian musician.
“Regardless of whether or not he’s guilty, the fact that he’s repeatedly in situations where such claims can be made, indicates that he’s not receiving sound advice. He’s not being guided correctly,” Brown noted. “If I were advising him, I would urge him to stay clear of these situations. He shouldn’t even be in a position where such accusations are possible.”
In May, Brown expressed skepticism over McGregor’s return to UFC. While McGregor has not officially scheduled his next fight, a match against Michael Chandler was anticipated after they squared off as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 31.
As the most recent allegations hang like a dark cloud, McGregor finds himself enmeshed in another controversy, with no clear indication of when he will return to the ring.
Brown also wonders about McGregor’s commitment to the sport, especially if his focus is more on partying than training for his comeback.
“Even if he fights again, which I doubt, the current lifestyle he appears to lead doesn’t suggest he’ll undergo the rigorous training necessary for a successful comeback,” Brown expressed.
There might be some hope for McGregor’s return due to his penchant for publicity, but Brown questions if we have seen the last of the Irish fighter in UFC.
“He loves being in the news, so it’s hard to imagine him completely disappearing from the scene. Whether he actually returns to fight, however, is another matter entirely,” Brown concluded.
