Marlon Vera has a few ideas about why Henry Cejudo is making a comeback. Cejudo stopped competing for three years, but he’s returning in May to take on Aljamain Sterling for the Bantamweight Championship at UFC 288. This means that Cejudo skipped over everyone else in line – including Marlon who is ranked number 6 – which made him wonder what was going on. When asked his opinion, Marlon said it in an understanding yet funny way.
Vera said before UFC San Antonio that the small person they were talking about was broke. They come back to the top because they want attention or because they need money. Vera also figured out this individual needed attention – so it’s why he came back.
Vera has had four consecutive wins and made a great video showing his skills as he works hard to reach the top of the bantamweight rankings. Despite this, he still has not earned a shot at the championship yet. On Saturday, Vera fights Cory Sandhagen in the main event of UFC San Antonio and though this is a step closer to bagging that title opportunity, it isn’t set in stone yet. It doesn’t bother Vera at all when he sees Cejudo getting another chance to clinch the titlefight instantly.
Vera said she would be really happy if the UFC did something for her. She said it is a wonderful feeling when something good like that happens to you and, in this case, Sandhagen was fortunate enough to experience it.
Sandhagen has competed for a title in UFC before when he went up against Petr Yan for an interim bantamweight title at UFC 267, but he lost sadly. However, his luck changed later on as he was able to win and defeat Song Yadong in a fight finished off this past September.
The people at the top of UFC San Antonio are both in the running for something, but what do they compete for when Vera and Sandhagen meet?
Veras said it’s hard to predict the rankings of fighters in UFC. Someone like Sean O’Malley could be ranked number one after beating Yan, or Merab Dvalishvili could be number one after beating Yan but Yan wasn’t even ranked number one at his last fight. Sometimes you don’t need to be rank ten to fight for a title and she’s okay with that as long as she keeps winning. Also, why is she fighting three main events in a row? This is because people go wild when they watch her fight; there must be a reason why the arena fills up with people and they cheer her name.
I’m making money and I believe if I keep it up, good things will come to me. I don’t need to stress or worry about getting something that I want because everything will work out if I keep working hard.
