Kai Kara-France has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 293 bout against Manel Kape, which was planned as part of the main card in Sydney, Australia on September 9, due to a concussion.

The New Zealand fighter announced via Instagram that he sustained a concussion during training, which led to the tough decision to step down from the card near his home.

Kara-France expressed his regret, saying, “I’ve had to withdraw from my next fight in Sydney, Australia, UFC 293. I suffered a concussion over the weekend in training. After talking to my coaches, team, and family, they all agreed that putting my health first is the right choice.”

He further apologized to his supporters, friends, and family who had purchased tickets and were looking forward to the fight, admitting that he was devastated not to be part of the event.

The fighter was eager to make a comeback following consecutive losses to Brandon Moreno by TKO and a contentious split decision loss to Amir Albazi in June. His return to the octagon will now have to be postponed due to the concussion, keeping him out of competition in September.

Kape, his would-be opponent, has also been frustrated with multiple changes to his fight schedule over the past year as he seeks to climb the flyweight ladder. Having won against David Dvorak last December, Kape was slated to fight ex-champion Deiveson Figueiredo, contender Alex Perez, and now Kara-France, with all three fights falling through.

At this time, it’s unclear whether Kape will still fight at UFC 293 against a different opponent or if the bout will be postponed.

UFC 293 will feature middleweight champion Israel Adesanya defending his belt against Sean Strickland, and heavyweights Tai Tuivasa and Alexander Volkov clashing in the co-main event.

Feel really bad for Kai, he’s had a tough time recently with those losses and now this. Health first though, he made the right call.

I’ve already bought tickets to see the event in Sydney. I’m gutted too, but still looking forward to seeing Adesanya.
