Julianna Pena expresses frustration after Amanda Nunes’ retirement at UFC 289: ‘What just happened?’
Following Amanda Nunes’ retirement from MMA after her dominant victory over Irene Aldana at Rogers Arena during UFC 289, Julianna Pena took to Twitter to vent her disappointment.
Initially, Pena tried to see Nunes’ retirement as a compliment, but her tone quickly changed. She tweeted, “I scared you so bad into retirement. Personally, congratulations. Professionally, what just happened?”
As the news sank in, Pena’s comments became more personal. She wrote, “Canadians don’t boo, they just walked out quietly before the fight was over,” accompanied by hashtags such as “snoozefest,” “terrible,” “stinker,” and “ducking.”
Pena stunned the world in 2021 by defeating Nunes and claiming the bantamweight belt. However, in their subsequent encounter, Nunes dominated the fight, battering and bloodying Pena, ultimately winning by unanimous decision with scores of 50-45, 50-44, and 50-43.
During UFC 289, Nunes achieved an even more convincing victory, with two judges scoring the fight 50-44 and one judge scoring it 50-43. This performance allowed Nunes to retire on a high note, leaving Pena with bitter disappointment.
