Israel Adesanya’s Challenge to Dricus Du Plessis: Dragging a Carcass Across South Africa

At a press conference after UFC 287, Israel Adesanya, the UFC middleweight champion, was not happy with some comments made by Dricus Du Plessis (a South Africa native and also an UFC middleweight). Du Plessis basically said that he is more “authentically African” than Adesanya as well as Francis Ngannou and Kamaru Usman–which are two other famous UFC fighters.

Usman, who used to train with Du Plessis, warned him to be more thoughtful about talking about ethnicity. Adesanya was very angry with Du Plessis’ words and wanted to teach him a lesson by fighting him.

The UFC champion said they don’t want to give their opponent any recognition, but really wish to fight them. They would like to do this in either South Africa or Nigeria and need the other person to prove themselves first, so that they can beat them and show history being made.

I’ll remind you to choose your words carefully when talking about those who have come before us and helped us get here. You should be respectful, but don’t give too much credit. If the person works hard and keeps succeeding, I will happily travel with him throughout South Africa.

Du Plessis just recently won for the fifth time against Derek Brunson in the UFC 285. He asked for a championship battle or elimination next in his fight.

UFC President Dana White has planned an event to take place in Africa, but it couldn’t happen because Adesanya, Ngannou and Usman (who were all champions at one point) aren’t UFC fighters anymore.

Adesanya is a champion fighter originally from Nigeria but now living in New Zealand. During his press conferences he speaks in his native Nigerian language a lot. He wasn’t sure who his next opponent would be, Du Plessis was likely that choice and on Monday he made sure to mention Adesanya’s name.

“He said he didn’t need me to say his name. He had the whole continent of Africa behind him, and he would be more than ready to fight me even if I get a victory in New Zealand. He told me that UFC Africa is not over yet, and we can have a fight on a neutral ground this year. And if unfortunately, I don’t win, I will get another chance to come and challenge him on African soil as they fear no one there.”
