UFC President Dana White has hinted that a rematch between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev may be on the cards.
On Saturday night, during the UFC 289 event, Oliveira enhanced his growing legacy by defeating Beneil Dariush in the first round. This victory marked Oliveira’s 20th finish in the UFC, adding to his existing record, and earning him a record-breaking 19th post-fight bonus.
In light of this, White has suggested that this outstanding performance may have won Oliveira a second chance to face off against the lightweight champion Makhachev.
“Dana lauded Oliveira’s progress, saying “If you trace his career from 2016 till now, he has transformed entirely as a fighter. The accomplishments he’s made in the past few years are extraordinary. Tonight, he came out looking like an unbeatable force. I can’t wait to see him take on Islam again.
“It’s logical… no point beating around the bush, this fight makes sense, it’s the one that should happen, and I’m thrilled to see it materialise,” White said.
Oliveira had previously squared off against Makhachev at UFC 280 for the vacant lightweight title after failing to make weight in his previous fight against Justin Gaethje. Despite his loss to Makhachev in the second round, Oliveira has expressed that the rematch will yield different results.
However, White clarified that several factors like potential injuries, scheduling, and Makhachev’s input are still to be considered.
“A multitude of factors have to be taken into account for the next fight,” White explained. “I don’t have information about his current medical condition, his plans for the summer, and so on. These factors greatly influence the fight-making process. But I can tell you, it’s a fight I’d like to witness again.”
As for the defeated Dariush, despite his previous eight-fight winning streak and a near-certain title shot, his prospects look uncertain after his loss to Oliveira. White expressed his concerns saying, “This is a tough blow for him. He has to regroup with his team and family, figure out his next steps. He’s likely dealing with the most devastating loss of his career, and he’ll need to address the mental and emotional aftermath.”
