Jorge Masvidal used to be one of those fighters who wasn’t very known, but before he quit fighting, he had become a famous and well-respected star.
On Saturday night at UFC 287, the 38-year-old fighter Jorge Masvidal retired after losing a fight but he had no regrets since he went from having very little money to becoming a millionaire. He had been competing in the sport for a long time, and only became popular in 2019 when he won two knockout fights against Darren Till and Ben Askren.
Masvidal is now a famous name, all due to the amazing way he ended his fight with Askren in just five seconds by using a flying knee. It was so impressive that it even set the record for being the fastest knockout in UFC history!
UFC boss Dana White said about Masvidal at the post-fight press conference, “That flying knee changed his life. When he threw it, not only did he win the fight but also got super popular!”
After an exciting fight, Masvidal was given the chance to compete in UFC 244 and have a chance to win a special title. The Rock even came all the way down to the cage ring to present it. In the end, Masvidal ended up controlling most of the match and due to too much harm inflicted on Diaz, doctors told their viewers that they would not allow him to continue anymore.
Masvidal last won a fight and headlined three more UFC events, which included two title fights against Kamaru Usman. Before Saturday night, he said that if he lost the match to Burns he might have retired. White thinks Masvidal made a good decision and is happy he has enough money to support his family in the future.
White suggested that if someone’s thinking about retiring from this business, then they should do it. After all, the person has already made a lot of money and, outside the octagon, like Conor McGregor does, achieved other things too. That person proved to themselves that their hard work and dedication was able to change their family’s life for the better. So why not retire?
Masvidal recently organized a boxing event featuring former UFC champion Anthony Pettis. It was broadcasted in multiple platforms such as UFC Fight Pass, and even UFC director Dana White tuned in to watch the match between Pettis and Roy Jones Jr.
Even though he didn’t really like it when Jones, who is 54-years-old, lost to Pettis by a majority vote, the president of the UFC still found some great things from Masvidal’s promotion and this might be something that Jones focuses on once he retires.
I watched the fight, and I really enjoyed all the fights in the undercard. What also impressed me was how good the production was. It was managed really well since they were quick with replays – almost as soon as something happened in the fight! It was impressively done, overall.
I’m not a fan of watching people in their 50s fight. But the fights between Jose Aldo and Jeremy Stephens on the same card as Vitor Belfort and Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza were really cool and I had fun watching them.
